Founded in 1921, the National Honor Society is a national organization that promotes and recognizes excellence in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Thousands of schools across the country have NHS charters and the society has nearly one million members.

The Luther North chapter of the National Honor Society is officially recognized and sanctioned by the NHS. It is both an honor society  and a service organization, recognizing academic achievement and providing members with service opportunities. Students become eligible for induction during their sophomore year, and must have completed three semesters with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale in order to qualify. Students must also receive teacher recommendations and are selected by a committee of faculty and administration.

Following induction, students are required to serve a minimum of thirty community service hours per year to maintain their membership. Some of these service hours can be attained through projects organized by the Luther North NHS leadership, like peer tutoring, open houses, and other service projects.
