Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

1.) What are the entrance requirements for a freshman student?

Each student wishing to enter the August 2009 freshman class must show evidence of his/her 8th grade graduation from a recognized elementary school. The student completes an application, countersigned by a parent or guardian, asking for admission to Luther North, “knowing that this is a Christian school and wishing to benefit from its Christian instruction.”

2.) What payments must accompany the application?

An enrollment fee of $150 is to be submitted with each application. This fee is non-refundable unless the school declines the application.

3.) What is tuition?

Please go to the Tuition menu item to the left to find the 2010-2011 tuition and fees. This is where you will also find information on the payment plans and discounts available.

4.) Is financial aid available?

It is important for families to note that approximately two-thirds of our students receive some form of financial assistance toward meeting tuition and fee costs. Grant, scholarship and student work programs are in place toward financial bridge building.

Like the tuition menu item mentioned above, we have an entire page dedicated to the Financial Aid available on the menu to the left.

5.) What placement tests are required for admission?

Stanford Achievement Tests and Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Tests are given to all applicants to determine their skill preparation for Luther North’s academic program. These test results are also used to determine a student’s placement in freshman courses.

6.) Where are these placement tests held?

Through a cooperative arrangement, students who attend one of the Lutheran elementary schools listed below will automatically take these required tests as part of their eighth grade program. Students from other schools will take the tests at Luther North.
Bethesda St. James
 Grace English  St. John (Chicago)
Jehovah St. Luke
Messiah St. Paul (Menard)
Our Saviour  St. Paul (Norwood Park)
Pilgrim St. Philip

7.) Must I take the 8th grade placement test before I can be considered for acceptance?

Seventh grade scores are sufficient to determine admission. Students attending one of the schools listed above already have scores on file at LHN. Students from other school must submit a copy of their seventh grade test scores as soon as possible.

8.) When will I find out if I have been accepted at Luther North?

Notification of your acceptance will be sent as soon as all required materials mentioned above have been submitted.

9.) When will I find out what courses I will be taking my freshman year?

In the spring, all new freshmen will come with their parents for an evening appointment with a counselor to review the results of the placement tests and to choose the courses the student will take in their freshman year.

10.) How will I decide what courses to take after freshman year?

Luther North realizes that its students arrive with a variety of abilities and goals. In developing both its curriculum and graduation requirements, care has been taken therefore to provide diversity of courses and ability levels within the framework of a sound Christian education.

In keeping with this philosophy, LHN offers a yearly appointment with a counselor for students and their parents to evaluate the student’s performance and to plan the courses to be taken in the following year. Thus, a college-bound student might be advised to take four years of English, math, and science, while a vocational student headed for the business world after graduation would be better served by courses in word processing and accounting.

11.) What are the levels of classes available?

Standard classes are available as well as advanced classes and Advanced Placement courses that are taken for college credit.

12.) Must one be affiliated with a Lutheran church in order to attend Luther North?

While Luther North is maintained and supported by Lutheran congregations in the area, students of all religious backgrounds are welcomed to our student body. About 52% of our students do not have Lutheran affiliation.

13.) Do all Luther North students come from Lutheran elementary schools?

No. Although the majority of each freshman class has had this background, about 50% of our students have come from public or other private schools.

14.) What is enrollment?

The 2009-2010 enrollment is 210 high school students.

15.) What is the average ACT score for seniors?

The average ACT score for seniors is 21.7.

16.) What percentages of LHN graduates attend college?

88.3% of last year's graduating students are attending  2 or 4 year colleges or universities around the country, and another 5-6% intend to enroll within two years.
